This weeks jam packed racing calendar meant that there was Acorns taking part in event near and far. Action kicked off this week at the Maghera 10K and 5K races with Acorns represented in both events. Eoin Hughes was first Acorn home bagging himself 3rd place overall in a time of 34.58, next Acorn over the line was Steven Mulholland in a time of 39.50 and Gary McGuckin in 41.23. First Acorn lady to finish was Leanne Sands, who was also first local female to finish in a time of 44.15, followed by Ciara Goddard in 46.39 and then on form Marsha Abbott in 47.37. In the 5K event Sam Linton was first over the line in a time of 17.43, followed by Brian Thom in 20.46 and then Acorns junior Ronan Lindsay in 21.13. Suzanne Bigmore was our First Lady to finish the race and was 2nd female overall in 23.36, followed by Jane Meharg and then Orlagh Brownlow. Thanks the Maghera Leisure Centre and the Mid Ulster Council for holding the event.

On Wednesday night some of our members travelled to Buncrana to take part in the Fuery Insurance 5K, which is famous for being a fast course which could produce PBs. Darrell McKee was first to finish in a PB time of 15.33 followed by Martin McVey who also got a PB of 16.10c closely followed by Aaron Meharg in a time of 16.21.

Friday night saw three teams of Acorns take part in the Carmen Runners 1mile Road Relay race in Carrickmore. The route seen our athletes start of with a lovely downhill start but this was too good to be turn as they were soon faced with the famous Malabhui hill but once they finally reached the top of that dreaded hill they were flying downhill to the finish line. All our teams put on impressive performances but our ladies team and men’s team narrowly missed out on coming home with the trophies with both of them finishing in second position. Although one of our members didn’t come home empty handed as Darrel McKee recorded the joint fastest mile of the night. Well done the Carmen Runners for hosting such a successful event.

On Saturday afternoon some Acorns took part in a wet 5 mile race in Blackwatertown. Our men put on a very impressive performance taking 3th, 4th and 5th position in the race. Francis’s daughter, Anna took part in the 2mile fun run and finished first female.

Acorns Orlagh Brownlow, Bronagh Stockman and Ailis Corey travelled over the water to take part in Rock N Roll Liverpool which saw a weekend of events including a 5K, half marathon and 1 run. On Saturday the three ladies took part in the 5K race.

Sunday morning saw an early start for some of our members who were travelling to Newry to take part in the half marathon event. Great performances were put on by all our athletes and the day was made even better for Edel Kidd as she achieved a PB which she had put a lot of hard work and effort to get.

On Sunday afternoon some Acorns went to Clady to take part in the Glenone 5K which was raising proceeds for action cancer. A warm afternoon for racing on a tough course which was gradually going uphill for the last mile to the finish line. Eoin Hughes won the race finishing in a great time of 16.19. Leanne Sands was First Female in a time of 20.18.

Bronagh Stockman and daughter Orlagh Brownlow too part in the Rock N Roll half marathon in Liverpool on Sunday morning. The two ran the race together enjoying the great atmosphere around the city finishing the run in a great time of 2.33.21.


Other Acorns athletes Jacqueline Cahoon and Judith Newell travelled to Edinburgh at the weekend to take part in another half marathon. Yet again the two ladies supports each other around the route taking in the sights and enjoying the atmosphere completing the run in a time of 2.18.20.

Members Jennifer Bradley and Deirdre Bradley took part in Race for Life at the Stormont Estate, Belfast on Sunday. These races are organised to raise money and awareness for Cancer Research UK. A great race for a very worthy cause.
