Action kicked off for the Acorn ladies on Tuesday night as Ballymena Runners hosted their ladies only race ‘Ballymena Belles’ . Acorns put on a very impressive performance and didn’t come home empty handed. Natalie Hall won the race in a time of 32.20, showing everyone she is definitely getting back to her best. Next Acorn to finish was Vice Captain Sandra McKeown, 5th overall in a time of 35.06, closely followed by Lisa Simpson in 35.31, who was 7th overall and 1stO35. Kate Semple was next Acorn over the line with yet another PB in a time of 37.12, followed by Jacqueline Cahoon with a PB of 38.38 and then Judith Dickson in 39.14. These six ladies also won themselves the overall ladies team prize. For some of the ladies this was their first ever road race. Thank you to Ballymena Runners for putting on such a great event and for the lovely hospitality afterwards.

Wednesday night saw a group of Acorns travel to Derry/Londonderry to take part in the Bay Road 5K, a course advertised as a PB course if weather conditions are right. Although on the night conditions were mixed and our athletes were faced with wind and rain at times, but this didn’t stop Acorns from putting up some great performances. Darrell McKee was first Acorn to finish, 5th overall and 1st O35 in an impressive time of 16.00. Thank you to City of Derry Spartans for organising a good event.

On Thursday night Paul Corey, the man who is completing 50 marathons in 50 days for Cancer Focus NI, joined Acorns during their training session at MUSA Cookstown to help him complete his 40th Marathon. Acorns AC would like to wish Paul the best of luck as he draws close to completing his 50th Marathon on Sunday 23rd April at London Marathon. You have been a true inspiration Paul.

Also on Thursday night Acorns junior athlete Andrew Shaw took part in the Firmus U17s 1500 meter race at the Mary Peters track. Andrew completed the race in a PB time of 5.12. Definitely an athlete to watch out for in the future.


Saturday saw an early start for four of our Acorns members as they took part in the Solas ‘ Darkness to dawn’ Charity 5K Run and Family Walk which started at 5.30am in Toome. The event was organised by Solas Community Counselling Services and was in association with Moneyglass and District Runners. Proceeds of the event were going towards Solas Counselling Services, which brings light to darkness. Acorns put on a good show as our own Gary McGuckin was 2nd overall in a time of 19.25, followed by new Acorn member Ciara Goddard who was 1st lady in a time of 20.57. Next Acorns in were Stacey Hinfey in a time of 22.13 and Edel McGuckin 23.40. Thanks to Solas Community Counselling and Moneyglass District Runners for organising such a worthy event and for their great hospitality after.


Some Acorns members took park in the Beragh 5mile road race on Satuday. A course which was challenging with a number of hills. First Acorn to finish was Kevin Bigmore in a time of 30.14, followed then by Chalky McGuckin 34.21. Next up was two Acorns ladies, Suzanne Bigmore who completed the race in a time of 40.52 and Edel Kidd who finish with a time of 42.12.


On Saturday afternoon Acorns Eoin Hughes travelled to Ballyliffin, Donegal to take part in the Ballyliffin International 10 mile Coastal Challenge. A very popular event with over 1200 athletes taking part on a very tough and challenging course that on the day had a strong head wind from approximately 4mile in until to finish. Although this didn’t stop Eoin as he put up a very strong performance to cross the line in first position in a time if 60.17.


As usual Acorns were in high attendance at local parkruns, putting up some great performances.

John Callaghan completed his first Park Run in CampertownCountry Park, Dundee in a time of 30.48. This Parkrun is on a multi terrain course of forest paths and tarmac sections.


On Easter Sunday Acorn, Martin MGirr took part in the Letterkenny 5K Run. Martin had a great run finishing 5th overall in a time of 18.43. Big thanks to Letterkenny AC for organising the event.
